Visit from Santa -- Monday, December 19th at 6:00 pm. Christmas stories will be read and Santa will be available for pictures. Don’t forget your camera! Remember to drop off at the library a wrapped gift from Santa for your child with their name clearly marked on it before the program starts. Happy Holidays! - The library will be closed Saturday, December 24th and Monday, December 26th for Christmas. We will be closed Saturday, December 31st and Monday, January 2nd for New Years.

Readers Group - Wednesday, January 18th at 1:15 pm. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. This monthly discussion group highlights the fiction and non-fiction titles read recently by participants. The group welcomes new members and is open to all people. Call the library for more details at 265-8245.

Evening Book Group - Wednesday, January 25th at 6:30 pm. We will be discussing Getting to Happy by Terry McMillan.

Winter Wednesdays - Wednesday, February 1st and Wednesday, February 8th starting at 11 am. Celebrating its 9th year the Friends of the Library transform the library into a café setting for which homemade soups, desserts, beverages, and quality used books are sold. Food may be eaten in the library or taken out. Winter Wednesdays have a café style dining from 11 am to 1:30 pm (or until the soup runs out!) with takeout available from 1:30 pm to 8 pm.

If you would like to donate soup, desserts, or your time please call the library at 265-8245. We welcome the donation of quality used books as well. Rain, snow, or shine, these events will go on. We hope to see you in February!

Surprise Saturday- February 11th from 11 am to 1 pm - The library hosts a special day just for children and their families. Surprise Saturday is a children’s day of fun events such as face painting, crafts, and storytelling. Every year we have a special guest come to take pictures with the children, in the past we have had Dora the Explorer, Tigger and Spiderman. Soup, desserts and books are sold this day as well so come hungry!

The Library will be hosting Stephen R. Swinburne author of the children’s book Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job on Tuesday, April, 19th at 9 am. Please arrive a few minutes early so that the programs may start on time.

Stephen R. Swinburne is the author of over 25 children’s books many of which are about wildlife. Whose Shoes? has been chosen as this year’s book for Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child program.

What do you want to be when you grow up? People work in various jobs. Very often, clothes fit the job. The right shoes, for example, can make a job easier or safer. Stephen Swinburne explores various occupations through a simple, lively text and bright, colorful photographs. The book includes a guessing game that invites young readers to guess which shoe matches which job. This engaging book offers a unique way of asking children what they want to be when they grow up.

For the sixth consecutive year, the “PA One Book” program will lead the way and highlight the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers ages 3 to 6. Through this program, adults with preschoolers in their lives will learn how they can support the development of literacy in preschool children.

Take a bus trip with your child from the library, to the school, and back to the library. This event is held on the same day as the School Tour for incoming Kindergartners and their parents. What a Treasure!, a picture book by Jane and Will Hillenbrand for children ages 3 to 6, is Pennsylvania's One Book, Every Young Child 2010 selection. This is the fifth year of the program, which highlights the importance of early literary development in preschool aged children.

Young at Heart Expo

Monday, April 12^th from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm

Dr. Paul Fehrenbach will be performing “Celtic Music” at 2:00 pm

The expo will be featuring organizations that offer services to adults over the age of 55. Recently Mengle Memorial Library was awarded a Library Service & Technology Act (LSTA) Senior Spaces Grant. This grant provided funding to be used in the purchasing of various materials for programs targeted to adults over the age of 55. The library has been holding programs entitled “Young at Heart” every Monday at 1:00 pm for adults in this age group since November 2009. As part of the Senior Spaces grant, this expo at the library will be the Kick-Off event for the official opening of our “Young at Heart” space that features materials specific to ages 55+.

The Senior Spaces grant was awarded to only six libraries in Pennsylvania, and will be recognized throughout the country in an upcoming American Library Association book and national convention. What a Treasure!

Thursday, April 29^th at 6:00 pm the library will be having a special One Book Every Young Child program. What a Treasure! by Jane and Will Hillenbrand is the featured book for the 2010 “Pennsylvania One Book One Child” program. A special guest will be reading the story and there will be various activities for children to participate in.

In its fifth year, the “Pennsylvania One Book” program highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers. Studies have shown that children need to be engaged in activities and discussions centered on a book for children to fully receive the benefits of early reading.

Active reading to young children provides the cornerstones of literacy needed for them to excel in school. Only 47.8% of children ages 0-5 are read to daily, and only 36% of Pennsylvania students are “proficient” or above in reading by the time they are in the 4^th grade. The “Pennsylvania One Book Every Young Child” program is designed to give parents the ability to interact with their children when reading stories, giving children skills they need to succeed in school and life. Painting Class

As part of the Young at Heart program, members of the Brockway Artists Connection will be teaching a monthly painting class at the library. The next class will be held Monday, April 19th at 1:00 pm. Evening Readers Group

The evening readers group will meet Tuesday, April 20th at 6:30pm. The group will be discussing “TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY” by Jay Asher. When Clay Jenson plays the cassette tapes he received in a mysterious package, he's surprised to hear the voice of dead classmate Hannah Baker. He's one of 13 people who receive Hannah's story, which details the circumstances that led to her suicide. Clay spends the rest of the day and long into the night listening to Hannah's voice and going to the locations she wants him to visit.

It is time for the 7th annual Winter Wednesdays at the Brockway library!

Started in 2004 as a fund raiser following state wide funding cuts, it has continued as a popular mid-winter event. Members of the Friends of the Library prepare homemade soups and desserts for patrons’ enjoyment for dining “in” or for “carry out.” In addition, the sale of quality used books is featured. The Friends’ goal is to promote library awareness and raise funds in an entertaining and community based style.

The Mengle Memorial Library has a new weekly program entitled “Young At Heart.” These programs are targeted at adults over the age of 55, but everyone is welcome to attend.

The “Young at Heart” programs will occur every Monday starting on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Programs will include classic movie showings, health and fitness, technology (including computer and Internet usage, and technology gadgets: cell phones, digital cameras, and electronic book readers), watercolor instruction, current events discussions, games (card games, board games, and Wii gaming), and much more!

Snapshot PA: One Day in the Life of Pennsylvania Libraries

On Wednesday, October 28th libraries all across Pennsylvania will be taking pictures to capture the impact that Pennsylvania libraries have on their communities on a typical day. The Mengle Memorial Library will be hosting several events on that day.

Young at Heart: Soup, Social & Games

The Mengle Memorial Library in Brockway, PA will be having their first Young at Heart program on Wednesday, October 28th at 12:00 p.m. Come to the library for Soup, Social, board games, and to experience the library’s new Wii gaming system. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Mengle Memorial Library invites you to come to the library on Wednesday, October 28th at 6:00 p.m. to spend a night with Washington Irving’s classic tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” A reading of the legend will be followed by a viewing of a movie adaptation of the story. This story may not be suitable for young children.

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is one of many books the library received as part of a National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) award titled We the People Bookshelf collection. Calling all MONOPOLY® game fans! The Mengle Memorial Library in Brockway will host a MONOPOLY® Game Tournament on Thursday, November 12th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Mengle Memorial Library.

The tournament includes two 90-minute preliminary rounds of the MONOPOLY® game that each participant is required to play, as well as a final round of play with the top six competitors to determine the winner. Kindergarten Bus Trip

The annual Kindergarten Bus Trip will be held onThursday, August 27th at 10:00 a.m. Take a bus trip with your child from the library, to the school, and back to the library. This event is held in conjunction with the School Tour for incoming Kindergartners and their parents. This will give your child an opportunity to adjust to the new experience of riding the bus before the first day of school.

Brazilian Music & Jazz

Come experience a night of Brazilian Music and Jazz at the Mengle Memorial Library in Brockway. On Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30 p.m. the library will be hosting the Commonwealth Speaker Flavio Chamis, a conductor and composer from Pittsburgh.

This presentation will cover much of the richly diverse and ebullient music that Brazil has to offer. Several well-known songs will be presented in their original Brazilian recordings, accompanied by an English translation of the lyrics. Spend a summer night enjoying music at the library.

Capital Campaign

The library is pleased to announce that we have reached our Capital Campaign goal. We are currently finalizing construction plans for our elevator project. We would like to thank everyone for their help in obtaining our goal.

New Parking

The library is now able to use the new parking lot located behind the building. We were able to fill and level the land in the spring. The paving will start as soon as the fill settles. The new parking lot is a wonderful addition to the library.

Preschool Connection Grant

The library is a recipient of a Preschool Connection LSTA Grant. This project has been funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

The LSTA Preschool Connection grant gave the library the opportunity to purchase numerous manipulatives (including puzzles), toys, cds, books, rugs, a rocker, and a train table.
These materials make our library a family destination place. Families now have a place to play with their children and to meet other families in the community.

Mother Goose on the Loose

The library hosted a workshop on the award winning early childhood literacy program “Mother Goose on the Loose.” The event was well attended by library directors, staff, and volunteers, along with workers from area children’s services agencies. Children from Pendelton’s Daycare enjoyed a “Mother Goose on the Loose” story time provided by Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen, creator of the program.

The Brockway library hosted illustrator Wendell Minor and author Florence Minor of If You Were A Penguin. If You Were A Penguin is the featured book for the 2009 “Pennsylvania One Book One Child” program.

Over 300 children participated in two events to learn more about penguins, writing books, and the importance of reading. Children were encouraged to follow their dreams and to find enjoyment in reading. Wendell wanted children to know, “the most powerful computer is between your ears, and the only software needed is 26 letters.”

Evening Book Discussion Group

The Evening Book Discussion Group at the Mengle Memorial Library in Brockway, PA will be discussing works by Janet Evanovich.

Read any one of her 36 novels and come to the library for a lively discussion on this New York Times Bestselling mystery author.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the library’s 6th Annual Winter
Wednesday Events. Thank you to everyone who provided soup and baked goods,
donated books, and the volunteers who worked the event.

This year was our most successful event. We raised over $2,000 for the library!

Our Surprise Saturday held a surprise visit from “Anytime” the Barbershop Quartet who beautifully serenaded the birthday girl Darlene Marshall. Everyone present
enjoyed their harmony.

Children's Mural

The Brockway Artists Connection donated their time and skills to create a beautiful mural entitled “The Reading Place” for the library.

Designed by Dick Pasi
Painted by Pam Basl, Mike Biss, Helen McKay, and Dick Pasi
Dedicated in memory of the BAC’s deceased president, Susan Veltri.

Located in the basement hallway of the library

The mural is 7 feet by 18 feet.
Completed on February 3rd, the mural took the Artists a combined total of 58 hours to complete.
